VELMA LANGFORD BRISTOW
January 2, 2010
Velma Langford Bristow, 88 of Andrews, passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2010 in
Andrews.
She is survived by her sons and their wives, Rusty and Kitty Bristow of Andrews, Michael and Robyn Bristow, Ruckersville, VA, grandchildren Steven and Shana Bristow, Luke and Jennifer Basey, Jeffrey and Courtney Bristow, Eric and Jennifer Bristow, and five great grandsons. Vanessa Fuganti, an exchange student from Brazil, became an “adopted granddaughter” during her stay. Velma was preceded in death by her husband Raymond H. Bristow, Sr.
Velma was an active member of Means Memorial Methodist Church since moving to Andrews in 1955. She was a teacher for the Wesleyan Class for several years. In addition, she volunteered at the Andrews Literacy Program for many years and was a charter member of the Friends of the Library. She continued on the Friends board and was an active library volunteer. She worked with Helping Hands and was a member in the Permian Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughter of the American Revolution and the Republican Women’s Club. Until recently, she was an avid golfer and a member of the Ladies Golf Association. She was an enthusiastic follower of the girl’s golf team when her granddaughter Jennifer played and later when Vanessa Fuganti played in 2001-02.
Everything that Velma did was done with enthusiasm - from golf to teaching to taking in a teenage exchange student. Her work with the literacy program and a number of Vietnamese people was such that she became the unofficial “grandmamma-san” of the community. Her amazing vitality allowed her to take in an exchange student at the age of 80; both she and Vanessa thrived during the year. The Wesleyan Sunday School Class was a particular joy to her for the past few years. She taught the class quite often and presided over the very lively discussions. Another joy for her was in the baking of hot rolls for friends, family, and any occasion where food was involved. She took great pride in making her rolls and then having people enjoy them. In short, Velma enjoyed life and the people around her.
A memorial service will be held at Means Memorial United Methodist Church 11:00 AM Thursday, January 7, 2010 with Rev. Rick Doyle officiating. Services are under the direction of McNett Funeral Home.

CLARENCE W. (Mutt) DAY
June 2, 2009
C. W. “Mutt” Day, age 83, was born May 25, 1926, to W. W. and Sarah Frances (Dean) Day in Ovalo, TX. He went home to be with the Lord on June 2, 2009. At the young age of 13, he was saved and then baptized in Jim Ned Creek near Ovalo. Following the example of his parents, he lived his life by his favorite scripture, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24: 15
Like many families in the era of his childhood, his family shared the joys and chores of farming. He grew up in a large, close-knit family consisting of 15 children and his parents. They were a loving family and remained close throughout their adult lives and were always ready for a competitive game of dominoes. As children, a spirited game of “Freeze-Out” with dominoes was often played before meal time to determine who got to eat first. With such a large family, there had to be two “seatings” to accommodate everyone.
Near the end of his school career, Mutt and his family moved to Union, TX, where he graduated from Union High School in 1944. His Ovalo and Union school friends were very important to him, and they often got together to reminisce. After graduation, Uncle Sa m came knocking and Mutt entered the U. S. Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Bennington, an aircraft carrier, as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate GA, Third Class during W. W. II. He always said that he was proud to serve his country and to do his share. However, after the war ended and the Navy tried to get him to re-enlist, he told them that if it was his time to get out, he was ready to go home.
He went back to Brownfield, TX to join his family and to be introduced to his future wife, Coreen Jonas. Mutt led the music at a little Baptist church in Brownfield, and Coreen often attended with his sisters and niece. She caught his eye, and they were soon dating. However, Coreen was not a Christian at the time. True to his favorite scripture, he witnessed to Coreen, and she was soon saved. They were married on Aug. 30, 1947. Joining this family were Dwayne in 1948 and Teresa in 1952. Mutt and Coreen then raised their family following Mutt’s favorite Bible verse. The Mutt Day Family attended church together, prayed together and served the Lord together. He taught 5th grade boys Sunday School for years and sang in the church choir.
Mutt was employed by Phillips Petroleum for almost 40 years, beginning his career in 1947 in Hobbs, NM. He worked in various gasoline plants in Seminole, Goldsmith, Crane, Fullerton, Odessa and Andrews. He retired from his position as Gasoline Plant Superintendent at Sprayberry in 1985. Modeling a Christian life at work, he treated his workers with respect and made sure that they had the necessary tools to do their jobs effectively. Mutt had a world of knowledge about gasoline plants and mechanical maintenance. He was a key figure for the company when the cryogenic plants were first initialized.
C. W. “Mutt” Day was a member of First Baptist Church Odessa and will be remembered as a Godly, honest, hard-working, happy man who loved people. He never compromised his relationship with the Lord, nor his values. He loved to sing and whistle and always entertained his own children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews with his many bird whistles and singing. He loved his family and friends and will be greatly missed. However, we know he’s in heaven, once again a well man and free from the medical challenges and complications of MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a bone marrow disease) that he has battled for the last three years. For that, we give thanks and honor to God.
He is preceded in death by his parents; 7 brothers, Billy Jack, Henry, William, Pete, Wayne, Leo and Horace Day; 4 sisters, Dovie Day, Oceal Huffman, Dorothy Marsh and Doris Whited and one granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years and 9 months, Coreen Day of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Dwayne and Sharon Day of Gardendale; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Ron Bryan of Odessa; grandson, James Day Gainer of Odessa; gra nddaughter, Amanda, Rodriguez of Gardendale; sisters, Bertha Marsh and Ruby Groves of Brownfield, and Wanda Lenderman of Tatum, NM; and numerous nephews and nieces, as well as his school friends and Phillips Petroleum friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00AM Friday, June 5, 2009 at First Baptist Church in Andrews. Rev. Charles Day, pastor of First Baptist Church in Tatum, NM, will officiate.
Internment will follow at Andrews North Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home.
Family visitation will be 6-8PM, Thursday at McNett Funeral Home in Andrews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation and thanks to all of our family, our church family and all of our friends for your love and support. We are also truly grateful for the fine doctors, nurses and medical staff who helped him throughout his medical challenges.
