Grace I. Thomas, 99, a resident of Permian Residential Care Center in Andrews, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 15, 2018.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life at 10:00 AM Saturday, April 21, 2018 at the First Baptist Church, 201 NE 2nd Street, in Andrews with Pastor Brant O’Connor, officiating. Graveside services will be at 4:00 PM Saturday at the Potosi Cemetery in Abilene. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 PM Friday at McNett Funeral Home. Grace was born on April 29, 1918 and would have been 100 years old in two weeks. She was born in Parnell, Texas in Hall County to Green Walker Edwards and Etta Ethel Williams Edwards. She was the fourth oldest in a family of ten children, and 3 sisters and 6 brothers have preceded her in death. She graduated as the Valedictorian from her high school at Oklaunion, Texas in 1936 and graduated from Draughan’s Business College for Women in Abilene in 1939. She worked at several secretarial jobs before going to work in the County Clerk office for Taylor County, where she retired after 24 years of service. She met Homer James Thomas while attending church in Abilene, and they were married on October 5, 1940 in Abilene. She was a past member of the First Baptist Church in Abilene, where she had worked in the nursery for many years. She enjoyed serving the church and teaching and loving on children. She was a past member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in Abilene. She was a long-time resident of Abilene and moved to Andrews in 2008. She was a current member of the First Baptist Church in Andrews, where she was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. She enjoyed her secretarial and business work throughout her career. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and making her children’s clothes. She is also remembered as a great caretaker for her husband and her daughter, Kathleen Thomas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer, on October 15, 1994 and her daughter, Kathleen, on December 11, 2013.
Grace is survived by her 2 daughters, Ethel Pope and husband, Charles, of Andrews and Geneva Shipley and husband, Rob, of Tyler, 4 grandchildren, Crystal Reynolds and husband, Chad of Mexico City, Mexico, Sheri Burgen and husband, Mark, of Justin, Ginger Schantz and husband, Dann, of Midland, and Kim Foster and husband, Josiah of Goose Creek, South Carolina, and 7 great grandchildren.
