Obituary for Paula Solano Pugao

Paula Solano Pugao
of Odessa, Texas
August 10, 1926 – November 20, 2017
Composed by the family

Paula was woman with strength of character and a generous spirit. She was born in Manila, Philippines, to Bruno Tumbocon Solano and Salome Aguirre Solano. The eldest of nine children, she helped her parents support and take care of her younger siblings, particularly during the difficult years of the second world war. She later worked as a civilian employee for the U. S. Army as a typist, which helped her gain experience in becoming an instructor of typing and short hand at the Gregg Business School in Manila. She was a pioneer and an active member of the Singalong Seventh-day Adventist Church, also in Manila.

On September 6, 1949, she married Ramon Moro Pugao, whom she has known most of her life. She worked as paymaster in the shipping ports for the employees of the General Maritime Stevedores’ Union. Together with Ramon’s family, they estabished a small housing business in Baltimore, Maryland, in the 1980’s. In 1990, they moved to San Francisco, California where they managed apartment complexes until they retired in 2005.

They moved to Andrews, Texas in 2006, to join their eldest son, Romeo. Ramon fell ill and an accident hastened his demise on February 5, 2011. Paula relocated to Odessa to live with her youngest daughter, Rhodora. An accident in February of 2016, caused further complications to her health, leading to her demise.

She is survived by her four children: Romeo (married to Marilyn Llorente) of Andrews, Texas; Rachel (married to Mario Rivera) of San Jose, California; Ramoncito (married to Myrna Mendiola) of Nashville, Tennessee; and Rhodora Pugao of Odessa, Texas. She also leaves behind two sisters: Beth Solano Andal (married to Ricardo Andal) of Antioch, Tennessee; and Luisa Solano Calizo (married to Ulderico Calizo), of Aklan, Philippines.

From these four children, she has six grandchildren: Reo Paolo Pugao (married to Irish Rivera) of El Paso, Texas; Rey Carlo Pugao, of Redondo Beach, California; Romeo Sebastian Pugao (married to Avilynn Basa) of Buena Park, California; Ramona Rivera Pimentel (married to Jonathan Pimentel) of San Bruno, California; Virginia Rivera of San Jose, California; and Rafael Pugao-Villarosa of Odessa. In addition, she has three great grandchildren, Ronin Kai and Royal Makani Pugao of El Paso, Texas and Romeo Xavier Pugao of Buena Park, California; and several nephews and nieces.

Paula lived a full and happy life. She loved to sing and listen to religious hymns. Her favorite hobby was crocheting different projects such as doilies, tablecloths and blankets, to give as gifts to her family and friends. Paula and Ramon provided support for those who were in financial need; and generously donated to different charitable institutions, particularly those serving children.

She will be laid to rest on Friday, November 24, 2017, at 2:00 PM, in the Andrews North Cemetery. Pastor Abner Razon of the Odessa English SDA Church will be officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 9 AM - 9 PM and Friday from 8 AM - 1PM.

Funeral services are under the personal care of McNett Funeral Home in Andrews. Please visit to express your condolences. Memorials may be sent to any charity for the assistance of needy children in her name.
